Madison Man Sentenced for
Illegal Possession of Firearm

Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Cory Floyd, 33, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by Chief U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to two years in prison, without the possibility of parole, for unlawfully possessing a loaded firearm as a convicted felon. Floyd pleaded guilty to this charge on February 15, 2011.

On September 29, 2010, the Madison Police Department conducted a consent search of Floyd’s apartment, after observing marijuana in plain view. Officers recovered a fully loaded .357 caliber pistol in a box, and Floyd’s birth certificate was folded up underneath the gun in the box. Floyd has a prior felony conviction for possession of controlled substances and he has an extensive misdemeanor history related to domestic violence incidents.

The charge against Floyd was the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
